TEACHING CORE REPERTOIRE THROUGH ATHLETIC BANDS PERFORMANCE

TEACHING CORE REPERTOIRE THROUGH ATHLETIC BANDS PERFORMANCE

Clinician(s): Grant Knox

As secondary music educators, our impact is maximized when we seek unique opportunities to expose our students to high quality and artfully-made repertoire. However, due to the nature of the “marching band machine,” we often neglect the potential impact to continue this educational effort on the football field and in the stands. This presentation offers high school band directors with a collection of short and adaptable stands tunes from public domain classical music repertoire that are often performed by NCAA Division 1 Collegiate Athletic Band Programs. In performing this repertoire at high school athletic events, band directors can (1) achieve classroom learning objectives in a unique and fun way, (2) prepare students for transition into collegiate athletic bands programs (i.e.: “College Readiness”), and (3) contribute to a more vibrant Friday night game atmosphere.
