MINDFULNESS IN THE MUSIC CLASSROOM

MINDFULNESS IN THE MUSIC CLASSROOM

Clinician(s): Beth Dameron

There are many lifelong benefits to practicing mindfulness that carry over into our roles as teachers and students. Mindfulness practices have known benefits such as improving focus, reducing stress and anxiety, and enhancing (academic) performance — these benefits can be seen and felt in the classroom. Moreover, there is also overlap with some of the most important aspects of teaching the foundations of music: body awareness, breath control, listening, responding, and developing imagination and expression. In this session, we will explore some ways that mindfulness can support classroom management, student behavior and self-regulation, and teaching and learning of music. You will walk away with some practical tools and exercises to adapt and implement in your own music classroom.
