Pedagogy for Every Brain: Neurodiversity in Music Education
Clinician(s): Heidi Moss Erickson
Just as biodiversity strengthens an ecosystem, neurodiversity reflects the natural variation of human brains. Our students bring different ways of attending, processing, sensing, communicating, moving, and learning into every musical environment. Rather than searching for a single “best” way to teach, this session explores how educators can cultivate learning environments that welcome those differences. We’ll build a practical pedagogical toolbox grounded in neuroscience, curiosity, flexibility, and play—using multiple pathways, cues, and strategies to help students discover what works for their brains. Many brains require many tools—and expanding our toolbox makes us better teachers for everyone.
