ELD Through Music: a New Way to Reach More Students and Grow Programs
Clinician(s): Erik Ohlson
We’re piloting an English Language Development (ELD) through Music course for middle school students (grades 7-8) in our district. This initiative expands music offerings for ELD students, who are often excluded from other electives, and leverages Prop 28 funds to create new music courses during the school day. This presentation will cover the course creation process, collaboration with our Multilingual Services department, the specific needs of ELD students, and how to replicate this model. The course follows the 2019 CA VAPA standards, integrating vocal techniques, music analysis, digital composition with Soundtrap, and student-driven cultural connections. The primary focus is on Academic Language Development for CELDT level 3-4 students.
