MAGIC IN THE APPROACH

MAGIC IN THE APPROACH

Clinician(s): Jennifer Barnett

When it comes to repertoire from diverse cultures, finding material that is high-quality, authentic, and accessible feels like an impossible task. Stumbling across that diamond in the rough is challenging enough, but that’s often only half the battle. Finding ways to present these works to students in a way that supports engagement, builds community, and develops musicianship is just as crucial. In this session, we will explore how and why programming repertoire from diverse cultures is an invitation to educators to broaden their pedagogical toolkit. Strategies for critiquing repertoire, fostering student engagement, and increasing rehearsal efficiency will be discussed. Attendees can expect to leave this session with a list of resources and repertoire to use in future semesters.
