Beyond the Baton: Teaching Ensembles to Play Without a Conductor
Clinician(s): Justin Enright
What happens when the baton is set aside and musicians take ownership of the ensemble’s music-making? This session explores practical strategies for developing conductor-less ensembles through the intentional use of movement, breath, and eye contact as grounding points for musical communication. Participants will discover ways to cultivate ensemble awareness, strengthen individual accountability, and foster a collaborative approach to rehearsal and performance. Designed for string educators and ensemble directors alike, this session offers practical tools for building independent, responsive, and musically connected ensembles.
