Exploring the Social and Emotional Benefits of Music Making for Special Education Students in the Elementary Learning Center Classroom

Clinician(s): Laura Lo & Kelly Martin

Join Elementary Music teacher Laura Lo and Director of PAUSD Visual and Performing Arts Kelly Martin to hear about their journey in designing a music program for Special Education students in a Learning Center setting. In spring of 2022, Laura and Kelly began developing a pilot program for an additional music class for students in our Learning Center Special Education classrooms. Utilizing knowledge from her experience as a K-4 general music educator, Laura developed an SEL-based curriculum to enhance and support students’ inclusion in music education. We will share what we learned in this process as well as tips, tricks, and activities to support both differentiation in the general music classroom and ideas to prepare all students for a beginning instrumental program.
