Filipino Representation in the Choral Classroom
Clinician(s): Clem Cano Kundiman
Presentation of a brief history on the influence of Spanish colonization in the Philippines and its music and specifically native Filipino composer, Niconar Abelardo. Abelardo was a prominent composer of his time and wrote many Kundimans – a contraction of Kung Hindi Man, which idiomatically translates to “if it were not so.” On the surface these Kundimans appear to be yearning romantic love songs but in fact were a metaphorical musical statement of the yearning of breaking away from the reign of Spanish colonization and influence. This will lead into sharing some choral arrangements to introduce in the choral classroom.
