Rethinking Literacy and Creativity in the Music Classroom
Clinician(s): Dr. Andrew Conklin
This clinic offers strategies for designing classroom activities and assignments that prioritize creativity and literacy. The approaches emerge from an asset-based pedagogical orientation, in which students’ prior experiences and knowledge are not only valued but integrated into the core of the learning that takes place. Topics include using a grid-based framework for transcription and dictation, mining student playlists for musical examples, and using melodic improvisation as a tool for engaging with form and phrase structure.
